Danny Boyle will make a return to the stage when he directs at the National in 2011Nicholas Hytner, the Artistic Director of the National, has announced plans for his 2010 season and beyond, and it looks like it could be the most exciting yet.
It may be a long way off, but all eyes will be on Danny Boyle in early 2011 when he returns to his roots to direct on the stage. The Slumdog Millionaire director will direct Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, making his debut at the Southbank venue.
Boyle is no stranger to the stage of course, having been Artistic Director of the Theatre Upstairs at the Royal Court between 1982 to 1985, as well as directing productions for the Royal Shakespeare Company. Boyle has described his 15 year movie career as a “distraction”.
Hynter's announcement also sees productions directed by Michael Grandage, Sir Richard Eyre, Peter Hall, Howard Davies and Rupert Goold, with star performances coming from Harriet Walter, Toby Stephens, Simon Russell Beale, Fiona Shaw, Paul Ready, Richard Briers and Claire Higgins.
The theatre community have welcomed the renewal of the theatre sponsorship deal with Travelex, which sees the £10 Ticket Season continue at the Olivier for a further three years.
