Jerusalem has won at strong of awards for the Royal CourtThe 21st annual Critics' Circle Theatre Awards were announced yesterday in the Delfont Room at the Prince of Wales Theatre.
It was to be a fantastic day for the Royal Court, who took home another string of awards. Jez Butterworth's Jerusalem, which transfers to the West End this coming Thursday, won Best New Play and Best Actor for Mark Rylance (pictured below right).
Enron, another Court production, was awarded Best Director for Rupert Goold. The production is also due to transfer to the West End this week.Most Promising Playwright went to Alia Bano, whose debut play Shades was performed in the Jerwood Theatre Upstairs.
It may have closed early when it transferred into town from the Lyric Hammersmith due to poor ticket sales, but Spring Awakening the rock musical that had a string of 5 star reviews, picked up Best Musical.
And it was a successful year for the Donmar, with Jude Law being awarded Best Shakespearean Performance in Hamlet, which transferred to Broadway.
In another Donmar production, Rachel Weisz was awarded Best Actress for her role as Blanche in Tennessee Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire.
