I saw what was for me a disapppointing production of Hedda Gabler by Adrian Noble at the Theatrre Royal in Bath.It lacked power and intensity and managed to trivialise (I thought) an extremely powerful play. Rosamund Pike’s ssophisticated acting as Hedda seemed more a part of an elaborate stage technique than the expression of disturbing emotions and social attitudes. The surely intended shock of her suicide at the play’s end passed off as though it were not much more than the breaking of a tea cup at a fashionable gathering.
The emotional impact of the action was rarely given much emphasis by the Director.
