The Royal Court today announced their launch of Theatre Local, a scheme which sees the theatre take productions out of Sloane Square and placing them in alternative spaces at the heart of London life.

Over the next six months, the theatre will present a season of work in a disused shop at the Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre.

Each production will be presented in a stripped back, ‘unplugged’ aesthetic with minimum set and lights. The season will begin with a revival of Random followed by three current Jerwood Theatre Upstairs productions, Disconnect, The Empire and Spur of the Moment.

Cooke described the Elephant and Castle shopping centre as “the perfect base for us to start this venture”, confirming that he wants to run the scheme there “for a minimum of three years”, reports What’s On Stage. He added that the decision to run the scheme was largely to provide access to productions for “people who will never travel to Sloane Square”.

“We’re based in one of the richest boroughs in Europe… which can create an obstacle in the audience relationship” he explained. “In a theatre, it’s as important who you’re sitting next to as what you’re seeing on stage.”

Tickets cost £8 and £5 concessions. To book visit www.royalcourttheatre.com
