Actress and producer Whoopi Goldberg is to star in her West End musical Sister Act in August.

Whoopi Goldberg takes on the role of Mother Superior in her West End musical Sister Act which she has produced since it opened last year. The star of the original film brought Sister Act to the London stage in May 2009. Whilst many theatre lovers hoped she would take on the lead role of Delores, Goldberg hired unknown Patina Miller, who has since gone on to win awards for the role.
Goldberg will join the cast as Mother Superior for a limited period, replacing Sheila Hancock who has played the role since the show premiered.
Bill Taylor of Stage Entertainment UK said: “The Sister Act journey has been an incredible one so far, and Whoopi's input from the development stage onwards has been invaluable. Now, back in her habit and on stage with our company at the beautiful Palladium, theatregoers get to see a comedy legend at work. To say the Sister Act family is excited might be something of an understatement!
“This is also a chance to say a goodbye to the indomitable, multi-talented and unspeakably wonderful Sheila Hancock, who has been a mother figure both on and off stage. I can never thank her enough for her part in making the show the success it is today.”
The actress will perform from 10th August to 31st August 2010 at the London Palladium, marking her West End debut.
